I paint what I haven’t figured out how to say yet. My work holds Black womanhood, memory, performance, devotion, softness, survival, and the strange theater of being seen. What returns again and again are masks, checkerboards, gold, interior spaces, and figures caught somewhere between protection and revelation.

These paintings begin in feeling before they begin in explanation. I’m interested in the tension between what is carried publicly and what is known privately — the roles we inherit, the rituals we perform, the choices we make to survive, conceal, and become.

I’m DeNesha Deans, a visual artist whose practice centers painting as a way of recording what can’t always be spoken plainly. My work moves between portraiture, symbolism, interior worlds, and emotional narrative, building a visual language around Black life, intimacy, memory, and self-possession.
